The JEF Academic Network has the aim to create a network of scholars and people working in an academic environment, sympathetic to JEF’s ideas and values, that could help to improve JEF’s theoretical and philosophical production through the elaboration and publication of policy memos, papers, brochures and the organization of conferences and seminars.
This TF will start its works by helping JEF-Erfurt in planning and implementing a first academic conference foreseen for the end of March 2017.
Outcomes and deliverables:
Organisation of a yearly conference, with high-profile academic speakers and participants, that would also produce:
Post-conference online brochures
Audio and Video Recordings
Publication of an academic journal, with high-profile academic papers, mainly online
Creation of an academic network, through a catalogue of speakers and participants and the setting of a mailing list
TF steps and timeline:
Creation of the TF (gathering of members and definition of work organization)

The TF will initially provide help for the concrete project of an academic conference planned by JEF-Erfurt (contact person: Casey McKenzie) and then elaborate a wider action plan for the future. It will work primarily online, using online sharing and collaborative document elaboration tools (e.g. Google Drive), the JEF forum, and VoIP services (e.g. Skype), according to the necessities and needs of the members.
Resources and Requirements:
For the first conference:
Depending on the size of the conference anywhere from 3-16 people will be required. The size of the conference we aim to plan will be modest initially, so a reasonable group would consist of 6 people. However, this does not mean that the task force would/should comprise of only 6 people. Depending on the rate of the conferences, a separate group may be needed to get a head start on things. With the addition of the academic journal, another separate group of people will need to be organized to filter requests and papers to the corresponding editor.
Due to the changing location and topic of the conferences funding will be conducted on an ad hoc basis. Once the location and the topic have been chosen, funding requests will be immediately sent out. Possible funding opportunities could be derived from hosting universities, foundations, government organizations and programs and conference fees. These same funding institutions will be contacted in order to create a stable budget for the journal.
There is no special knowledge required to join the task force, while it focuses on academia it is also a learning experience for all JEF members. However, having said this a background in project management would be beneficial. And once the academic journal is functional, members well-versed in proofreading and editing will be desired as well.
Since the task force is open to all JEF members, it could give many the chance to experience conference planning. As well as how to maintain an academic journal.
Furthermore many JEF members have university backgrounds, and some are even continuing on to Masters and PhDs. The conference and academic network offers them the opportunity to meet researchers and experts in the field, while the journal could help promote their own research.
