Brussels/Skopje. March 23.
The non-partisan youth NGO Young European Federalists (JEF Europe) organises - in cooperation with their national section, JEF Macedonia - its half-yearly Federal Committee (FC), its main decision-making body, taking place at the Macedonian Parliament in Skopje. The Vice-President of the Parliament Frosina Tashevska-Remenski, the Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, and the Mayor of the City of Skopje Petre Shilegov will be the main guest at the official opening of the Federal Committee. The Federal Committee is supported by the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia, Government of the Republic of Macedonia, City of Skopje, Agency for promotion and support of tourism, Open Society Foundation Macedonia, and Youth Educational Forum. Other venues include “Makedonska kukja” national restaurant (?????????? ????) and the Youth Cultural Centre Skopje (Mladinski Kulturen Centar Skopje / ????????? ???????? ?????? ??????) where the social events of the FC will take place. On the last day of the FC, the delegates will participate in a street action to send the message that the Republic of Macedonia and the wider region of the Western Balkans are an inseparable part of Europe, therefore promoting the idea of European unity.
Thanks to the logistical preparations of JEF Macedonia, around 70 people from 20 countries will gather this weekend in Skopje to discuss and adopt resolutions on a wide range of topics, such as citizens’ consultations, social policy and civic education, and the perspective for European integration of the Western Balkans region. Furthermore, they will discuss the upcoming European elections in 2019 and elect their new Secretary-General.
Christopher Glück, President of JEF Europe, states: “This weekend gives us the opportunity to build upon our long-term objectives that we established at the European Congress in Malta last fall. We are at a crossroad for strengthening the EU. Important decisions will be taken that will have a lasting impact on the EU’s future, and after a renewed excitement for the reform agenda last summer, it seems that spirits have cooled down somehow. We, as Young European Federalists, want to shape the Europe of tomorrow, a Europe that delivers for citizens and is not prey to narrow-mindedness and national selfishness. We will explore the possibilities to structure citizen conventions that promote meaningful engagement of the European people, and move Europe forward with a strong campaign for the European parliamentary elections of 2019. We also remain firmly committed to EU enlargement and are pleased to be in Macedonia during a time when crucial steps towards a future membership of the country in the EU are being made”.
Ivan Nikolovski, President of JEF Macedonia, underlines: “It is a great honour for us as a country and a national JEF section to host the first ever FC to take place in the Republic of Macedonia. This FC sends a strong message that Macedonia and the Western Balkans region are an indivisible part of Europe, without which a united Europe is not entirely completed. Moreover, the FC in Skopje represents a wonderful opportunity to critically discuss the future development of our continent and address the current socio-political trends. I wish all the participants a pleasant stay in Macedonia and a fruitful work”
