Civil society and political parties join the call to #wakEUp EU leaders

Category: News, Press Release

Hundreds of citizens will gather in next to Rond-Point Schuman on 28 June from 13:00 to call on EU leaders to stop sleepwalking towards the collapse of Europe and agree on long awaited reforms to revive Europe on the occasion of the June European Council meeting.

The initiative is receiving widespread support from civil society organisation and political parties from Belgium and Europe. It has been warmly received by the Members of the European Parliament themselves, who will join the demonstrators in the big numbers.

“Europe needs a wake up call, putting youth at the centre of its construction and development for the success of the European project!”, says María Ballesteros Melero, Vice-President of AEGEE-Europe, partner of the initiative. "We believe in the European Union, but we also believe that the union is far from perfect and there is still a lot of work to be done. In order to create the union we want to live in in the future, we have to stand up now and demand reforms." concludes Danica Vihinen, Secretary-General of the European Liberal Youth (LYMEC).

In particular, youth organisations have shown great enthusiasm for the initiative. This is especially relevant, as it shows a strong pro-European stance among the young generation that is eager to finally see a united European answer to the challenges of migration, common defense and eurozone governance, among others.

So far, the initiative has been joined by AEGEE, the European Citizen Platform, EU Logos, EU-Events, Europa United, Europeístas, Eyes on Europe, Federalistes d’Esquerres, the Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG), garagErasmus, Génération.s, the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY), the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY), Jeunes-MR, LYMEC, Manifeste-continental.eu, Mouvement des Jeunes Socialistes (MJS), MR, New Europeans, Stand-Up for Europe and the Young European Socialists (YES).

The demonstration “#WakEUp, Revive Europe!” will take place on June 28th as of 13:00 in front of the European Council (“Petite rue de la Loi", between rond-point Schuman and Parc du Cinquantenaire) and is promoted by the Union of European Federalists (UEF), the Young European Federalists (JEF) and their respective sections in Belgium and Brussels, in cooperation with the European Movement in Belgium. The appeal of the initiative can be retrieved in full online (bit.ly/wakEUp).
