XXIV European Congress of the Young European Federalists (JEF), November 10 - 12, 2017 in Malta

Brussels/Valletta. November 8, 2017.

The non-partisan youth NGO Young European Federalists (JEF Europe) organises their bi-annual European Conference, the highest decision-making body, in Malta. H.E. President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca will open the Congress and is going to host the official Opening Ceremony at Verdala Palace. This Opening Ceremony is supported by Conventions Malta.  The Congress itself will take place in the National Library, Valletta, and is supported by the Ministry for Education and Employment.

Thanks to the logistical preparations of JEF Malta, around 160 young people who live in 27 countries will gather this weekend in Malta to discuss the work for the upcoming two years. Following six months of preparatory work, the young activists will discuss draft resolutions on a wide range of topics, such as citizenship throughout Brexit, the EU’s foreign policy towards African countries as well as the institutional design of the Eurozone. Furthermore, they will elect a new Executive Board and Federal Committee for the mandate of 2017 - 2019.

Christopher Glück, President of JEF Europe, states: “This weekend gives us the opportunity to define a common strategy for the upcoming two years. We are at a crucial moment for the EU. Important changes need to be made to secure the EU’s future and after years of stasis, an ambitious European reform agenda is finally building momentum. For JEF, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the Europe of tomorrow. We will explore possibilities to contribute to meaningful citizen conventions and move Europe with a strong campaign for the European elections.”

Rebecca Zammit, President of JEF Malta, notes that:  "We at JEF Malta are deeply honoured to be hosting this notable Congress.  From a logistical point of view, this has been a daunting challenge for a small group of University students, and we are looking forward to seeing the results of all our hard work. From a European perspective, the Congress is a unique gathering of passionate and intellectual youths who have the drive to reform Europe at a critical point in its history. It is crucial that as youths active in the smallest EU state, we make the most of this chance to actively shape how European politics should look like”.
