On the day the Heads of State and Government meet in Brussels for an important European Council meeting, pro-European and federalist movements will gather in Brussels to tell them: #WakEUp, Revive Europe!
Everyone agrees Europe needs change, yet very little gets done. It is time to send a message to our leaders to stop sleepwalking towards the collapse of Europe and to take the action needed to create a sovereign, democratic and united Europe.
The organisers invite all those who believe Europe needs political unity, those who think EU political leaders must take action to revive Europe now to join the demonstration “#wakEUp, Revive Europe!” on June 28th as of 13:00 in front of the European Council (“Petite rue de la Loi", between rond-point Schuman and Parc du Cinquantenaire).
“The Eurozone is in sheer need of reforms. Leaders have been discussing them for years, but they fail to deliver over and over again. They know that the Eurozone and the EU cannot work in the interest of European citizens with such a tiny budget. The spread of populist and nationalist movements shows how deep the crisis of trust is. If national leaders don’t act now, they will be responsible for the collapse of the European project”, says Paolo Vacca, Secretary-General of the Union of European Federalists. “Some member states, at the head of which Germany, do not realise the urgency of reforming the EU because, at least for the moment, everything goes well for them. But they would be the first losers of an unravelling of the EU. They think we have time, but actually European citizens are asking for a change now. Either they do it, or voters will turn to the populists”, adds Christopher Glück, President of the Young European Federalists.
The appeal of the initiative can be retrieved in full online (bit.ly/wakEUp).
The action is promoted by the Union of European Federalists (UEF), the Young European Federalists (JEF) and their respective sections in Belgium and Brussels, in cooperation with the European Movement in Belgium.
The Union of European Federalists (UEF), is a supranational political movement dedicated to uniting Europe along federal lines. The UEF consists of 25 member organisations across Europe that are autonomous centres of the UEF activities, reaching out to EU citizens and spreading the federalists' message to them by organising various activities in their countries.
The Young European Federalists (JEF) Europe is a non-partisan youth NGO with over 13.000 members active in more than 35 countries. Founded in 1972, the organisation strives towards a federal Europe based on the principles of democracy, subsidiarity and rule of law. JEF promotes true European Citizenship, and works towards more active participation of young people in democratic life.
