Call for The New Federalist (TNF) Chief Editors

JEF Europe - Young European Federalists is recruiting a Senior Editor-in-Chief and a Junior Editor-in-Chief for The New Federalist, the English edition of the JEF web magazine, starting in September 2019. Recruitment is for a period of 12 months, with the option to continue a further 12 months. Both positions are voluntary. The work is online-based.

Main tasks:

  • Coordinating the curation of content for The New Federalist

  • Together with other editorial team members, proofreading and publishing articles on the webzine

  • Recruiting the next TNF editorial team and leading its work

  • Strategic planning for the development of TNF

  • Maintaining connections with the French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Dutch editions of the JEF webzine

  • Building partnerships with other relevant actors

Additional tasks may involve:

  • Organising training events together with The New Federalist’s sister editions

  • Helping to manage The New Federalist’s social media accounts

Profile of the ideal candidate:

  • Excellent command of English is required; knowledge of other languages (especially French and German) is a plus

  • Strong understanding of European and EU affairs is required; prior volunteer experience in JEF is an advantage

  • Prior experience of writing or journalism is an advantage

  • Prior leadership experience is an advantage

Journalism/editing skills:

  • Ability to correct grammar and syntax; ability to edit ensure clarity and logical structure

  • Fact checking skills

Personal qualities:

  • Ability to take initiative and coordinate a team

  • Consistency and commitment

Computer literacy:

  • Good working knowledge of text editors 

  • Good working knowledge of basic online collaborative tools (Google Drive)

  • Basic knowledge of web content management systems (CMS)

Time investment: 

Estimated 10 hours/week/person. The New Federalist aims to publish an average of one article per day, including weekends.

Type of contract:

Both of the positions are voluntary. Recruitment is for a period of 12 months, with the option to continue as Editor for another 12 months (subject to discussion with the JEF Secretariat at the end of the first 12-month mandate).

  • The deadline for applications is 23:59 Brussels time on 15 September. Successful candidates will be invited for a face-to-face or Skype interview between 19 and 25 September.  

  • The selected candidate would ideally start their engagement on 27 September 2019. The first task will be to recruit other editorial team members for 2019/20.
