Lobby for a Flexible and User-Friendly ECI - your action is needed before Tuesday 4th May!
JEF Europe have launched a massive campaign to lobby for a
flexible and user-friendly European Citizen's Initiative, and your
action is needed! JEF Europe's campaign, in cooperation with
the citizensinitiative.eu
is
of upmost
importance for our organisation, the
entire federalist movement and even European civil society as a whole.
The
Executive Bureau have prepared a Template
Lobby Letter and JEF Europe like to spread it to as many Members of the
European
Parliament (MEPs) and Ministers of Foreign Affairs as
possible to lobby
for less practical obstacles in the ECI Regulation in
an effort to make
this valuable democratic instrument more user-friendly. People from
non-EU countries are equally invited to raise pressure by
contacting, for instance, Commissioner Šefčovič Maros to
demonstrate
their interest in making Europe more citizen-friendly.

Only a flexible and user-friendly ECI can inject more democracy into the EU The Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) are mobilising all pro-democratic forces of their Europe-wide network to lobby the European Parliament and the Council in an effort to remove the unnecessary obstacles for launching a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) contained in the draft ECI Regulation as proposed by the Commission on 31st March 2010. JEF-Europe President Philippe Adriaenssens explains:” JEF welcomes the ECI as a unique opportunity to breathe new life into European democracy and strengthen the participation of citizens in EU policy-making but it would be a terrible mistake to limit the potential of this innovative tool through inflexible and restrictive implementing rules. There is no threat that the ECI would be abused as the Treaty of Lisbon requires every ECI proposal to fall within the competences of the Commission and serve the implementation of the Treaties. But if a rigid Regulation renders the ECI practically unusable, the threat is real that it could repeatedly cause frustration with the EU Institutions, widening the gap between the EU and its Citizens.” “JEF-Europe has published its 4 key demands on www.citizensinitiative.eu calling on both MEPs and governments not to accept the national barriers, high entry thresholds, narrow time frame and insufficient legal and technical support,” Adriaenssens explains. |

125 CITIES ACROSS THE GLOBE FOR A FREE BELARUS
On the night of 18th March 2010 the Young European Federalists (JEF) and numerous global partners protested against Europe's last standing dictatorship on the fourth anniversary of the disputed presidential elections in Belarus. The fifth consecutive "Free Belarus Action" took place in 125 cities on four continents, including cities in almost all European countries, even Belarus!
The Young European Federalists' signature street action saw young people gagging statues and each other and posing with signs reading "Give the people of Belarus a voice" in protest against Lukaschenko's dictatorship, which has left the 10 million Belarusian citizens deprived of fundamental human rights, including the right to free speech.

JEF international seminar in Tarxien, Malta | 17-23 October 2010 “The ultimate solution for a better life: (im)migration?” is an international seminar organised by JEF-Europe and JEF-Malta in Tarxien, a small village in the south east of Malta from 17 until 23 October 2010. When speaking about immigration it is important to make the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants. Despite the obvious difference in their legal status, immigrants in both categories often feel unwelcome and excluded from their host societies, which is closely linked to xenophobic attitudes widespread across Europe and openly manifested especially in recent years, but also the lack of adequate policies and assistance of governmental institutions in host countries. |
