Less talk and more action for a world beyond carbon

1260976517_earth.jpgThe Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) welcome the UN Copenhagen talks on Climate Change, which were solemnly opened last week. Nonetheless, talks are not enough and JEF-Europe demands a bold, binding and long-term environmental deal because climate change is not only a global threat to human, economic and social rights but also risks to put at stake the stability of democratic regimes through conflict over scarce resources and mass migration.

Philippe Adriaenssens, President of JEF-Europe, states: “Thanks to the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, the European Union literally commits itself in Article 191 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU to ‘combating climate change’. Therefore, the EU has both the capacity and the responsibility to emerge as a true environmental frontrunner in Copenhagen and beyond.”

Executive Bureau Member Elisabeth Velle affirms: “JEF is convinced that finding a solution to climate change is less of an economic or technological matter, and above all a matter of political will. Therefore, we maintain that the EU must also stand for ‘Environmental Union’, one which has environmental legislation strong enough to make it the catalyst of a world beyond carbon!”

The Young European Federalists call upon all the states and NGOs present at Copenhagen to seize this unique opportunity to conclude a legally binding and ambitious agreement. “We ask all countries, and the EU member states in particular, to overcome their current differences in the negotiations, initiate measures to reverse the worrying trend of increasing emissions within the next decade and reach the goal of cutting global emissions by 90% by the year 2050, as recommended by the growing scientific consensus,” Elisabeth Velle concludes.
