100 Cities Against Lukashenko Demand Global Europe

WHO: JEF-Europe (Young European Federalists) and partners
WHAT: Street actions to gag statues with banners saying: "It's Time for Change... It's Time for a FREE BELARUS!"
WHERE: Simultaneously in cities across Europe and the world.
WHEN: 18th March 2009 - the anniversary of Lukashenko's condemned election victory.
WHY: Belarus - The last dictatorship in Europe, at the EU's doorstep is a prime example of what the EU needs to act on. It's important to highlight the absence of a SINGLE EUROPEAN FOREIGN POLICY needed to address the situation in Belarus as well as other global challenges.
HOW: putting street actions pictures on the JEF website within few hours from the action, so as to give a complete idea of the number and type of actions across Europe and elsewhere.

If you wish to download high-resolution photos from previous Belarus actions click here. See the PR in Belarusian below.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) over 100 cities will demonstrate against Lukashenko’s unjust regime and demand a European Foreign Policy for the EU, to fight dictatorships and address major global problems.

The action is the first of the three major street actions in JEF Europe's European Parliament Elections campaign It's Time for Change... It's Time for Europe! [www.itstimeforeurope.eu ]

Commenting on the success of the action, Action Co-ordinator Toni Giugliano said:

“Over 100 cities across Europe and the world standing up to Lukashenko is a record which JEF Europe is proud of! Clearly, European youth are determined to keep the fight for democracy in Belarus alive".

"In the past year we have witnessed growing signs of pressure for democratisation within Belarus and increased dialogue between Brussels and Minsk but there's still a long way to go".

"Brussels must make it clear that freedom of the press and NGOs and above all respect for human rights, especially with regard to the opposition, are prerequisites for any EU gains and EU entry for Belarus officials".

"JEF-Europe demands an EU Special Representative for Belarus in order to ensure that improvements are made, and that democratic elections can be restored to the country".

"Tomorrow, European youth will remind our leaders and civil society that Europe is not a dictatorship-free continent."

Commenting on the campaign for the European Parliament elections, JEF-Europe President Samuele Pii said:

"The upcoming elections are a 'make or break' for the European Union. There is no room left for failure".

"Following 3 rejections in EU referendums in 3 years and voter apathy continuing to grow in all EU Member States, these European elections need to capture the real issues that EU citizens want to hear".

"That's why we ask candidates to support our Manifesto of ambitious but concrete proposals that the EU must adopt, in order to tackle the problems that EU citizens are currently facing". "The situation in Belarus is only one example of where the EU has completely failed as promoter of democracy and liberty".

"Europe is incapable of speaking in a unified, decisive voice on a global level. It's time to put nationalism behind us and start singing from the same hymn sheet". [ENDS]

[www.itstimeforeurope.eu].

JEF international seminar in Tarxien, Malta | 17-23 March 2010

The ultimate solution for a better life: (im)migration?” is an international seminar organised by JEF-Europe and JEF-Malta in Tarxien, a small village in the south east of Malta from 17 until 23 October 2010.

When speaking about immigration it is important to make the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants. Despite the obvious difference in their legal status, immigrants in both categories often feel unwelcome and excluded from their host societies, which is closely linked to xenophobic attitudes widespread across Europe and openly manifested especially in recent years, but also the lack of adequate policies and assistance of governmental institutions in host countries.
